About Our Cabinets

Timeless Amish Craftsmanship, Built for Your Home

Crafting Exceptional Cabinetry for Every Space

Located in the heart of Ohio’s Amish Country between Apple Creek, Mt. Eaton and Mt. Hope, High Point Cabinets is a family-owned Amish custom cabinet shop serving northeast and central Ohio as well as Western Pennsylvania. We work with clients from Mansfield to Wooster, Medina, Columbus, Cleveland, Akron/Canton, and even Pittsburgh.

What sets us apart is simple: we’re a true Amish cabinet shop; the kind people imagine when they think of authentic Amish craftsmanship. Every cabinet we build reflects the quality, durability and timeless appeal that Amish woodworking is known for. There’s no mass production here – each cabinet is carefully crafted one at a time in Dave Mast’s workshop, located right next to his family home.

When you choose High Point Cabinets, you’re getting more than just storage solutions – you’re getting heirloom-quality pieces built to last for generations. It’s the Amish way of building, where quality always comes first and every detail matters.

The Amish Way of Wood Selection & Finishing

At High Point Cabinets, our “Amish Way” is not a marketing slogan—it is a rigorous technical standard. In Dave Mast’s workshop, the journey from raw lumber to heirloom cabinetry is defined by centuries-old wood science and a meticulous hand-finishing process that mass production cannot replicate.

Amish wood selection begins in well-managed hardwood forests. Unlike commercial shops that buy bulk-milled “shorts,” we prioritize First and Seconds (FAS) grade lumber, ensuring the highest percentage of clear, defect-free wood.

1. Cherry: The Living Wood

Cherry is the crown jewel of Amish cabinetry, prized for its elegant, fine-grain structure and its unique photo-reactive properties.

  • Technical Profile: With a Janka hardness rating of approximately 950, Cherry is softer than Oak but offers superior dimensional stability.

  • The Amish Standard: We select for Heartwood Cherry, avoiding the pale sapwood found in lower-grade cabinets.

  • The Aging Process: Cherry is light-sensitive. It begins as a light pinkish-brown and, through a natural oxidation process, deepens into a rich, dark russet patina over the first year.

  • Best For: Formal kitchens and “furniture-style” islands where a smooth, sophisticated texture is desired.

2. Maple: The Modern Workhorse

Maple is chosen for its incredible density and its “blank canvas” grain, making it the premier choice for both deep stains and painted finishes.

  • Technical Profile: At 1450 on the Janka scale, Hard Maple is exceptionally resistant to dents and scratches.

  • The Amish Standard: We look for consistent “bright” color and a closed-grain pore structure. This prevents “blotching,” a common defect in commercial maple cabinets.

  • Staining Expertise: Because Maple is non-porous, our artisans use specialized sanding techniques to “open the grain” just enough to allow the stain to penetrate evenly.

  • Best For: High-traffic kitchens, contemporary designs, and painted finishes (Modern Farmhouse style).

3. Oak: The Timeless Heritage

Oak remains a staple of Amish cabinetry due to its prominent grain and unmatched structural integrity.

  • Red Oak: Features a warm, porous grain that “takes” stain deeply, highlighting the natural “cathedrals” in the wood.

  • Quartersawn White Oak: The technical peak of oak selection. By cutting the log at a 90-degree angle to the growth rings, we reveal “ray flecks”—stunning, tiger-like patterns that provide superior resistance to warping and moisture.

  • Best For: Traditional or Mission-style homes where the beauty of the wood grain is meant to be the focal point.

Staining Expertise: The 6-Step Finishing Process

A High Point cabinet is finished not just for beauty, but for a lifetime of chemical and moisture resistance. We utilize a hybrid of traditional hand-rubbing and modern chemical protection.

  1. Meticulous Graduated Sanding: We begin with coarse grits and progress through multiple stages to a “silky” finish. Each piece is hand-inspected under cross-lighting to ensure zero cross-grain scratches.

  2. Grain Preparation: Depending on the wood species, we may utilize grain fillers or “water popping” (raising the grain) to ensure the stain absorbs with perfect uniformity.

  3. Pneumatic & Hand-Applied Color: Our “Amish Way” involves a two-stage coloring process. We first apply stain using a pneumatic sprayer for even coverage, immediately followed by hand-rubbing. This forces the pigments deep into the wood fibers, creating a depth of color that machines cannot achieve.

  4. Sealing the Color: A specialized sealer is applied to “lock in” the pigment, protecting the wood from moisture during the final stages.

  5. Final Hand-Scuffing: Before the topcoat, we perform a “micro-sanding” by hand. This removes any microscopic “nibs” or dust particles, ensuring the final surface is perfectly smooth to the touch.

  6. The Shield: Catalyzed Conversion Varnish: The final step is the application of a Catalyzed Conversion Varnish. Unlike standard lacquer, this finish undergoes a chemical reaction that creates a high-performance cross-linked bond.

    • The Result: A surface that is virtually impervious to household chemicals, boiling water, and the high-humidity environment of a busy kitchen.
