The Art of Selection: Dave Mast’s Signature Wood Species
At the heart of every High Point kitchen is a commitment to the raw material. Dave Mast personally oversees the selection of hardwoods, ensuring that every plank meets the rigorous standards of furniture-grade cabinetry. While big-box retailers often rely on veneers and composite cores, Dave’s philosophy is rooted in the use of solid, locally sourced North American hardwoods. This selection process isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about the soul and structural integrity of the kitchen.
Quarter Sawn White Oak A favorite in Dave’s workshop, Quarter Sawn White Oak is prized for its “flake” or “tiger stripe” grain patterns. Beyond its beauty, the quarter-sawing process makes the wood exceptionally stable. Because the grain runs vertically through the board, it is far less likely to warp or cup in the humid environment of a busy kitchen, making it the premier choice for heirloom-quality inset cabinetry.
Natural Hickory and Character Maple For homeowners seeking a rustic or transitional look, Dave often recommends Natural Hickory. Known for its dramatic color contrasts—ranging from creamy whites to deep browns—Hickory is one of the densest and most durable woods available. Similarly, Dave’s use of Maple provides a versatile canvas. Whether left natural to showcase its fine, uniform grain or finished with a custom stain, his Maple cabinets offer a smooth, glass-like surface that is nearly impervious to daily wear and tear.
Red Oak and Cherry Traditional elegance is achieved through Dave’s mastery of Red Oak and Cherry. Red Oak is celebrated for its deep, open grain and legendary strength, while Cherry is chosen for its unique aging process. Dave understands that Cherry will “mellow” over time, deepening into a rich, warm patina that only grows more beautiful with age.
Time-Honored Precision: The Amish Joinery Method
The durability of a High Point kitchen lies in what you cannot see. Dave Mast employs traditional Amish joinery methods that have remained largely unchanged for generations, eschewing the staples and glue-only shortcuts of mass production.
English Dovetail Drawer Boxes In Dave’s workshop, every drawer is constructed using true English dovetail joints. This interlocking “wedge” design is the gold standard of woodworking. Because the joint’s geometry naturally resists being pulled apart, the drawer remains structurally sound even after decades of heavy use. Dave pairs these solid wood boxes with premium under-mount soft-close glides, bridging the gap between 18th-century strength and 21st-century convenience.
Mortise and Tenon Face Frames To ensure the “skeleton” of the cabinet is indestructible, Dave utilizes mortise and tenon joinery for all face frames. By carving a “tenon” (a projecting tongue) on one rail and fitting it into a “mortise” (a corresponding hole) in the stile, he creates a mechanical bond that is far superior to modern pocket-screw methods. This ensures that your cabinet doors remain perfectly aligned and the frames never sag under the weight of heavy stone countertops.
Hand-Sanding and Floating Panels Before any finish is applied, every component undergoes a multi-stage hand-sanding process. Dave’s team pays particular attention to the “floating panels” within the doors. By allowing the solid wood center panels to “float” within the grooved frame, Dave prevents the wood from cracking or splitting as it naturally expands and contracts with the changing seasons—a hallmark of authentic Amish craftsmanship.
